Dark circles under the lower eyelids are common in men and women. Often accompanied by bags, dark circles can make you appear older than you are. To make matters worse, they can be difficult to get rid of. Though they can affect anyone, dark circles are most common in people who:

are from non-white ethnic groups (darker skin tones are more prone to hyperpigmentation around the eye area)



Oversleeping, extreme fatigue, or just staying up a few hours past your normal bedtime can cause dark circles to form under your eyes. Sleep deprivation can cause your skin to become dull and pale, allowing for dark tissues and blood vessels beneath your skin to show. Lack of sleep can also cause fluid to build underneath your eyes, causing them to appear puffy. As a result, the dark circles you see may be shadows cast by your puffy eyelids.

2. AGE

Natural aging is another common cause of those dark circles beneath your eyes. As you get older, your skin becomes thinner. You also lose the fat and collagen needed to maintain your skin’s elasticity. As this occurs, the dark blood vessels beneath your skin become more visible, causing the area below your eyes to darken.


Staring at your television or computer screen can cause significant strain on your eyes. This strain can cause blood vessels around your eyes to enlarge. As a result, the skin surrounding your eyes can darken.


Allergic reactions and eye dryness can trigger dark circles. When you have an allergic reaction, your body releases histamines to respond to harmful bacteria. Other than causing uncomfortable symptoms — including itchiness, redness, and puffy eyes — histamines also cause your blood vessels to dilate and become more visible beneath your skin.

Allergies can also increase your urge to rub and scratch the itchy skin around your eyes. These actions can worsen your symptoms, causing inflammation, swelling, and broken blood vessels. This can result in dark shadows beneath your eyes.


Dehydration is a common cause of dark circles under your eyes. When your body is not receiving the proper amount of water, the skin beneath your eyes begins to look dull, and your eyes look sunken. This is due to their proximity to the underlying bone.


Overexposure to the sun can cause your body to produce an excess of melanin, the pigment that provides your skin with color. Too much sun — particularly for your eyes — can cause pigmentation in the surrounding skin to darken.


Family history also plays a part in developing dark circles under your eyes. It can be an inherited trait seen early in childhood and may worsen as you age or slowly disappear. Treatment for dark eye circles depends on the underlying cause. However, some home remedies can help manage this condition. Some of the more common methods include:

Apply A Cold Compress: A cold compress can help reduce swelling and shrink dilated blood vessels. This can reduce the appearance of puffiness and help eliminate dark circles. Wrap a few ice cubes in a clean washcloth and apply to your eyes. You can also dampen a washcloth with cold water and apply it to the skin under your eyes for 20 minutes for the same effect. Repeat this process if the cloth becomes warm or if the ice melts.

Get Extra Sleep: Catching up on sleep can also help reduce the appearance of dark circles. Sleep deprivation can cause your skin to appear pale, making the dark circles more obvious. Allow yourself seven to eight hours of rest to prevent dark circles from appearing.

Elevate Your Head: While sleep deprivation can play a part in producing those dark bags under your eyes, sometimes it’s how you sleep. Elevate your head with a few pillows to prevent fluid from pooling under your eyes, making them look puffy and swollen.

Soak With Tea Bags: Applying cold tea bags to your eyes can improve their appearance. Tea contains caffeine and antioxidants that can help stimulate blood circulation, shrink your blood vessels, and reduce liquid retention beneath your skin. Soak two black or green tea bags in hot water for five minutes. Let them chill in the refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes. Once they’re cold, apply the tea bags to your closed eyes for 10 to 20 minutes. After removing, rinse your eyes with cool water.

Conceal With Makeup: While makeup and cosmetics do not cure dark eye circles, they can help to camouflage them. Concealers can cover dark marks, so they blend in with your standard skin color. However, as with any topical treatment or makeup product, use proper care. Some products can cause your symptoms to worsen and may trigger an allergic reaction. If you begin to experience irregular symptoms from any topical treatment, stop use immediately and schedule a visit with your doctor.


So how do we combat them? How do we look younger, and most of all, how do we even out our complexion? For all of you who have internal problems, whether weakness, lousy diet, or irregular lifestyles, you know exactly how to change it. Lessen stress in your life by incorporating yoga, meditation, or even a hobby at least three times a week into your life. This will change the way you look and feel. Vitamin supplements are often needed, and I recommend Vitamin B & C, which help repair and improve the skin texture. Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, kiwi fruits, apricots, and melons have high contents of Vitamin C and should be included in your diet. 

1. Massage

Mix coconut oil and almond oil and massage gently in a circular motion around the eyes. Leave on for about an hour. This should be done daily. You can also make the following eye mask that lightens dark circles if used regularly. My suggestion is to make the mask and store it in the fridge. It will easily last up to 1 week without going bad.

2. Eye background Fresh Coconut

A few drops of lemon juice

2 tsp grated cucumber

1 tsp fresh cream

3 tsp china clay.

Mix all these ingredients and keep them in the fridge. Cover the eyes with a cotton gauge and apply the mask over it, ensuring that the pack does not drip into the eyes. You can lie down in a cool place and relax. This should ideally be left on for a minimum of 20 minutes before gently washing off with milk and then water.

3. Tomato Eye Toner 

Tomatoes make for an excellent exfoliating agent. It is a hit when it comes to beauty regimes. Mix lemon juice and fresh tomato juice and massage the eye area daily. Leave the toner on for about 20 minutes and wash with coconut water.

4. Grated Potato

Raw grated potato or even cold raw potato slices have lightening effects on the skin. I have used this ingredient many times with positive results to lighten dark circles. Try it yourself and see how it works for you. 

5. Herbal Teas 

Most of us have smartened up and realized the vagaries of too much sugar in tea and coffee. We have switched over to healthier substitutes like herbal teas and non-sugary drinks. If you too have crossed over and drink herbal teas, never throw the tea bags in the bin but keep them refrigerated. Use these on the eyes, especially after doing an eye massage. Chamomile tea bags are excellent for this and have dramatically lightened the eye area!

6. Kojic Acid

Anecdotal reports state kojic acid is effective in treating dark circles. Kojic acid is a natural product that comes from two species of fungi. However, it is essential to know that side effects of kojic acid can include contact dermatitis and reddening of the skin.

7. Azelaic acid

People may use azelaic acid to treat hyperpigmentation under the eyes, and it is safe to use over long periods.

8. Chemical Peels

Chemical peels using alpha-hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid, can help to lighten hyperpigmentation under the eyes. People may also use chemical peels combined with topical creams for better effect.

9. Lasers

Laser therapy can be an effective treatment for dark circles. Less invasive laser procedures, such as pulsed dye or diode lasers, may lessen the risk of scarring or other potential side effects.

10. Fillers

If thinning the skin or loss of fatty tissue is causing dark circles under the eyes, fillers may be a potential option. People can have platelet-rich plasma injections of hyaluronic acid gel into the area under the eye.

11. Surgery

A type of surgery called blepharoplasty can get rid of dark circles due to deposits of fat or extra skin around the eye area. The area under the eye is extremely delicate, and people should always discuss possible side effects. They must also ensure that only a certified dermatologist carries out any medical procedures for this area. If people take certain drugs, such as bimatoprost for glaucoma, dark circles will disappear after they stop using the medication.
